Gillian Bates has been working equally a full-time cloth designer since 2008 and has proudly exhibited internationally and more recently has created work specifically for John Lewis and the View from the Shard.

In this interview Gillian talks most her early on life at college and how she was inspired to create her own style of fine art. Nosotros learn what materials and techniques she employs and why British wild fauna has such a special identify in her heart.

TextileArtist.org: What initially attracted yous to textiles equally a medium?

Gillian Bates: I have always loved to draw, sketch and paint and I was initially was drawn to fine art, during my foundation art educational activity just I began to look longingly at what the Textiles group were producing, I loved the freedom and versatility of the textile medium.

And, more specifically, how was your imagination captured by stitching?

I discovered the art of stitching during my degree. I purchased an old battered 1950s Bernina and completely fell in dearest with the procedure of using my sewing machine equally a drawing stylus.

First steps

What or who were your early on influences and how has your life/upbringing influenced your work?

Equally a kid, I always spent whatsoever pocket coin I had on sketchbooks, pencils, paints anything creative I could discover. But it wasn't until my mid-20s I decided to have my inventiveness seriously and I enrolled in a local art college there I was encouraged to continue onto a Fabric degree. I have been very lucky to have some amazing tutors that actually inspired me forth the way helping me find my way and encouraging me to accept the next steps.

What was your route to becoming an artist?

Once graduating in 2007 I became adamant to put what I'd learnt into practise and in Apr 2008 I became a full-time textile designer/maker and I haven't looked back since.

How do you apply your chosen techniques in conjunction with stitching?

My current work is created using a combination of manus painting, motorcar embroidery and embellished with traditional hand stitching techniques.

Creating contemporary textiles

How would you describe your work and where do you recall it fits within the sphere of gimmicky art?

Although I don't believe I'one thousand creating contemporary fine art I do believe I am creating gimmicky textiles. I have ever felt that my work can sit comfortably within the Arts or Crafts, something that can definitely be used to my advantage especially when considering exhibitions and shows.

Do you use a sketchbook? If non, what preparatory work practise you do?

I do utilise a sketchbook, I believe it's something important to my work, as I often piece of work from photographs it is great preparation for my stitched piece of work. I volition then create my stitched pieces from my sketchbook work and but then use the photo for reference. The advantage to this is that it creates a unique fabric.

Tell us about your procedure from conception to conclusion.

I will take a primary idea and so sketch a few composition ideas in my sketchbook until I feel happy to progress and then begin to create the textile. I under pigment the fabric for added depth then I like to build up a number of layers creating a back, mid and foreground with coloured machine and hand sew together work every bit a painter would use paint.

Making brave decisions

What environment exercise you like to work in?

I take a dwelling house based studio and I enjoying working in solitude during the mean solar day I piece of work very intensely, and in one case I'1000 in the 'zone' it'due south nice non to accept also many distractions. 1 thing I love about having a home based studio is that I can piece of work a 12 hour day without realizing!

What currently inspires y'all?

My current obsession is British wild animals I take e'er created piece of work that is a celebration of everything quintessentially British. Only I am really enjoying how the stitched textures I create translate so easily to feathers and fur.

How has your piece of work adult since y'all began and how do you meet it evolving in the future?

I commencement started to create seaside landscape scenes, I alive in Eastbourne a sleepy seaside town and i Mother's Twenty-four hours I went downwardly to the seafront with camera in hand and started capturing snapshots of families promenading along the seafront against the groundwork of the elegant Victorian architecture. I began to create bright linear stitched studies.

It's only this year I decided I wanted to evolve my work and motility away from the seaside theme. I began to create more textured work and began to innovate pigment every bit a medium. I felt information technology was a brave decision that had to exist taken to proceeds as an artist. I feel I learnt a lesson at that place that I'm not a one-adult female factory but I am an artist and I need to permit for growth in the hereafter.

The joys of textiles

What advice would y'all give to an aspiring cloth artist?

I practice believe yous really need a unique selling betoken, particularly with textiles, y'all want to wow the viewer and make them question how you made your slice was created. I also work at a local university a few sessions a month, I teach the degree students the joys of textiles. I always encourage my students to follow their passions and merely go for it!

What piece of equipment or tool could y'all non live without?

I have to say the Internet is my well-nigh important tool. In the early days of self-promotion of my work the internet became invaluable enabling my work to been all across the world. Information technology'southward a great style to just fifty-fifty get instant feedback on a new piece not to mention the majority of my sales come via online.
